Why Solution-Focused Isn’t Always Useful – And How Somatic Approaches Can Help

Solution-focused coaching approaches are great for identifying goals and moving forward, but they’re not always the answer.

Why? Because not all challenges can be solved by looking ahead and finding solutions .

Many of my clients arrive at our coaching sessions usually feeling stressed or anxious.

A solution-focused approach might ask, “What’s one small thing you can do today to reduce your stress, even a little?”

Many people tend to think that stress is an emotional or mental state, but we actually hold stress in the body for example as a tension.

And when stress isn’t processed or released, it gets “stored” in the body as chronic tension or somatic symptoms.

So it’s all great thinking about one small thing you can do to reduce your stress, it’s going to be, what I call a surface level fix.

So here’s where a somatic approach is different as it addresses the root cause, by tuning into our bodies and becoming aware of where stress is stored in the body and listening deeply to what the body is telling us.

Sometimes, moving forward isn’t about finding solutions. It’s about listening – to what the body is telling us and creating a sense of safety and regulating the nervous system. Only then you can find lasting solutions that are not just a surface level solution.

This is why I start all my coaching sessions with somatic practice to create change and heal from inside out.
