Most people have the best intention when they start implementing healthy eating habits, like eating less or trying out different fad diets… but they struggle to STICK with them and end up going back to their old eating habits, only to start all over again!

This may be exactly what you’re doing right now too!

But Ayurveda, the ancient healing system which have been practiced over 5,000 years, teaches us the concept of ‘like increases like’ and ‘opposites decrease each other’ by the use of Gunas, also known as ‘the qualities’.

When an imbalance occurs in the body, whether that’s weight gain, poor circulation, low energy… you can treat it by increasing opposite qualities.

For example if you are susceptible to feeling the cold you wouldn’t drink cold water, which would make you even colder right? You would drink something warm like some soup or a cup of tea and feel the benefit.

Another example based on Ayurveda principles would be that if you tend to have dry skin, it’s advisable to avoid drying food and consume more warming and water-rich food to give more liquid to the body.

There are 20 common qualities (Gunas) based on Ayurveda, which appear in 10 pairs as a guideline to treat your imbalance:

In order to apply this concept effectively, you need to understand the qualities of your Dosha and the Dosha imbalances you are currently experiencing.

Vata have light, cold, dry, mobile/erratic, rough, subtle qualities.

Pitta have hot, light, penetrating, oily, mobile qualities.

Kapha have heavy, cold, humid, stable, softening qualities.

When you apply these concepts in your diet, over time, you will notice that you have less cravings for junk food or sugary food, and instead you will be wanting more nourishing foods that are beneficial for balancing your Dosha.

BUT applying these concepts in your diet is just the beginning!

You will also need to apply these concepts when it comes to your lifestyle and Yoga practices (which also includes, meditation, pranayama and mantra) to fully experience the transformation and experience the lasting changes you desire in your life.
