Yoga Philosophy: How and Why to Practice Gratitude When Times are Tough

If you are like me when I started my Ayurveda journey, you may feel that there is so much to learn about Ayurveda and implement in your life if you want to feel the benefits.

I understand that you may initially feel this way too.

And yes, if you aren’t familiar with Ayurveda and Yoga and how they interact then it may feel a little overwhelming!

Well the good news is that it doesn’t need to be 😊

Whilst some people advocate an all or nothing approach (as I experienced this from some Ayurvedic practitioners I consulted with) I do not feel this is right for most people, especially at the outset of their journey.

We are all human and very few of us can commit to something 100% from day one.

For example if you are starting your career to become a professional tennis player would your coach tell you to train every day, with no breaks or variation? No. This is asking for an injury or for you to lose interest pretty quickly. Wimbledon will not be on the cards!

For me starting on your Ayurvedic journey should be the same.

This is why I don’t advocate launching into it 100% straightaway, or encourage you to follow a strict routine from day one (or ever!) if this does not work for you.

This is why I encourage all my Aligned & Balanced students to follow and create their own 80:20 rule – where for the majority of the time you follow the principles and routines that you learn, but for the rest of the time you may allow a little more flexibility into your life.

For me this means following a longer morning routine in the week and doing a shorter one at the weekend.

Or going to bed and waking up slightly later at the weekend.

If I go away and can’t strictly follow this, then I let it go!

The same goes for diet. There may be times when I fancy a sweet Japanese treat and a coffee which isn’t really Ayurvedic, but that’s ok!

I want my students to find a balance that works for them.

I have found that the implication of this is that people stick with it and ultimately create new habits that last for the rest of their lives.

They can then develop their practice deeper if they want, from a firm foundation.

So today, have a think about your own 80:20 rule in your daily routine!
